Mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:     

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions

Mathematics is taught daily across the school using BigMaths. In line with our experiential approach to learning where possible children are directly taught skills, then encouraged to use and apply them in practical ‘real’ contexts or in problem solving activities.


Children learn in different ways and teachers alter their teaching style accordingly to include visual, auditory and practical activities.

ICT is used across the school to support learning and teaching in maths.

This year we have introduced Numicon to support our teaching of mathematics, you may have seen the coloured pictures of the Numicon on the walls of the classroom or on the windows. During our Open Afternoon in the first half of the Autumn term you will have a chance to see it in action and maybe even have a play yourself!
